MIIGWECH FOR JOINING US
WATER OVER NICKEL DAY 2025

Saturday, September 6 • 11am – 3pm • Big Sandy Lodge & Resort

Miigwech to our relatives, neighbors, and community members who gathered with us for Water Over Nickel Day. Your presence meant everything.

This day reflects who we are as a people—deeply connected to the land, the water, and one another. When we gather in community, we renew our shared commitment to protect Minnesota’s natural environment and water resources for ourselves and for the generations yet to come.

Water Over Nickel is an initiative led by the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe to protect our water, land, and people from the negative impact of the proposed Tamarack Mine.

Water Over Nickel Day reminded us:

  • Water is life, and our clean water must remain untouched

  • We are the caretakers of our land, our people, and our stories

  • This is our time to raise our voices and protect what matters most

Looking Ahead

The proposed Tamarack Mine is entering a critical phase in 2026 as the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will open a public comment period. This is a key moment for us to stand together and speak up for the land, water, and future generations.

Our strength is in our connection to each other and to the natural resources that sustain us. When we speak together, we carry the wisdom of our ancestors and the responsibility to those yet to come.
